Opening Day 2018 "Starkey Cup"

Old and new club members attended our 2017/18 Opening Day season BBQ and "Starkey Cup" memorial day

The event was held at our Nicholson venue in nice warm, sunny conditions, with a Southerly breeze of about 5kts. However, by the start of the first race the wind swung more Easterly, as the afternoon racing progressed from 5kts to about 15kts gusts (A rigs used by all). Ten boats competed with 7 IOMs, a Budgie, a DF95 and a 1.5. Good to see some new and old faces after our season break, and glad Bob was able to attend too.

Bob has done a wonderful job building and maintaining this website (still managing NAGS and NAAF sites) but now Colin has the role of continuing his work for 2018 on.

After a morning sail and tune, we stopped for a wonderful BBQ lunch with lots of snags, chicken skewers, casserole, salads, desserts and munchies. Very amicable, relaxed and enjoyed by all.

After some starting tape hassles, we started racing after 1:00 PM. We had five races of three laps around our rectangle course. People were taking their penalties well but Peter must be mentioned for declaring ROW for Windward Boat - rules refresher course required!

The new platform was a pleasure to use, with plenty of room to sail and launch and with better water access but, with the water so low and clear, we found the keels were hitting rocks piled up against the new supports, with weed covering them. Should be fine when the water level rises though.

FIRST on 9pts- Peter Ellsmore - Pikanto #77

SECOND on 10pts - David Meldrum - Alternative #55

THIRD on 15pts - Colin Johanson - PP5 #41

Then, with scores - Richard 23, Bruce 25, Maureen 36, Martin 37, Bernard 39, Trevour 42, Alan 46, with no discards.

Some had minor boat issues, but nothing major or broken - pretty good for boats that some have been ignored for months.
